277 <h2>DESCRIPTION</h2>
\r
278 <div class="sectionbody">
\r
279 <p>Reads list of objects from the standard input, and writes a packed
\r
280 archive with specified base-name, or to the standard output.</p>
\r
281 <p>A packed archive is an efficient way to transfer set of objects
\r
282 between two repositories, and also is an archival format which
\r
283 is efficient to access. The packed archive format (.pack) is
\r
284 designed to be unpackable without having anything else, but for
\r
285 random access, accompanied with the pack index file (.idx).</p>
\r
286 <p><em>git-unpack-objects</em> command can read the packed archive and
\r
287 expand the objects contained in the pack into "one-file
\r
288 one-object" format; this is typically done by the smart-pull
\r
289 commands when a pack is created on-the-fly for efficient network
\r
290 transport by their peers.</p>
\r
291 <p>Placing both in the pack/ subdirectory of $GIT_OBJECT_DIRECTORY (or
\r
292 any of the directories on $GIT_ALTERNATE_OBJECT_DIRECTORIES)
\r
293 enables git to read from such an archive.</p>
\r
296 <div class="sectionbody">
\r
303 Write into a pair of files (.pack and .idx), using
\r
304 <base-name> to determine the name of the created file.
\r
305 When this option is used, the two files are written in
\r
306 <base-name>-<SHA1>.{pack,idx} files. <SHA1> is a hash
\r
307 of object names (currently in random order so it does
\r
308 not have any useful meaning) to make the resulting
\r
309 filename reasonably unique, and written to the standard
\r
310 output of the command.
\r
318 Write the pack contents (what would have been written to
\r
319 .pack file) out to the standard output.
\r
323 --window and --depth
\r
327 These two options affects how the objects contained in
\r
328 the pack are stored using delta compression. The
\r
329 objects are first internally sorted by type, size and
\r
330 optionally names and compared against the other objects
\r
331 within --window to see if using delta compression saves
\r
332 space. --depth limits the maximum delta depth; making
\r
333 it too deep affects the performance on the unpacker
\r
334 side, because delta data needs to be applied that many
\r
335 times to get to the necessary object.
\r
343 This flag causes an object already in a pack ignored
\r
344 even if it appears in the standard input.
\r
352 This flag is similar to <tt>--incremental</tt>; instead of
\r
353 ignoring all packed objects, it only ignores objects
\r
354 that are packed and not in the local object store
\r
355 (i.e. borrowed from an alternate).
\r
363 Only create a packed archive if it would contain at
